"In the eastern United States, some Native American groups played a violent form of lacrosse in which injury and even death were accepted as part of the game. This painting, by American artist George Catlin, depicts an 1834 Choctaw game that Catlin witnessed near Fort Gibson, in present-day Oklahoma. As many as 700 men participated, frantically trying to catch the ball with their netted sticks and throw it between the poles to score a goal. Biting, stomping, tripping, and butting were used to obstruct opposing players." [via]
