[BOXLA] Inside The Boards

The box scene across North America has been heating up this week.  The Canadian playoffs are nearing the end with Six Nations capturing the Minto Cup and the Mann Cup set to start later this week between New West and Peterborough.   There was huge expansion news that came out of the NLL as well.

SIX NATIONS TAKES HOME THE MINTO CUP

Our first post last week looked at the Six Nations Arrows.  If you read that post you know that the Arrows coming away with the Minto was hardly a shock.  They went unbeaten at the tourney against Mimico, Coquitlam and Okotoks.  They outscored the competition 55-26 and swept Coquitlam 2-0 in the final series.

Austin Staats led the tourney in scoring with 24 points on 13g and 11a.  Goalie Doug Jamieson was stellar as well.  After his performance you can see what New England Blackwolf leadership was thinking when trading starting G Mike Kirk.  Jamieson looks like he may be ready to take over full time.
The Arrows have won three of the last four Minto Cups.

San Diego to Join NLL
For anyone who has followed closely the announcement that San Diego was joining the NLL was a matter of when,  not if.  Billionaire businessman Joe Tsai has entered the ownership arena.   There is a great interview with Tsai on the Inside Lacrosse podcast page from the lacrosse industry summit that will give you all the info you need on Tsai.  To me, getting a person of Joe Tsai’s stature is a huge win for the league.  He is going to bring a stability and track record of success.  Steve Govett has joined his management team as well from the Colorado Mammoth.  He has the experience of launching an NLL team in a new market.   NLL Commish Nick Sakiewicz deserves a huge amount of credit for finalizing this deal.  Well done.
There were two numbers that really stood out in the coverage.  First, NLLTV has in excess of 25K subscribers.  The second number is 5 Million.  That is the rumored figure Tsai bought the expansion franchise for.  The team will begin play next season.

Mann Cup
Any lacrosse fan especially those of the NLL should be focused on the Mann Cup Finals starting this week.  The New Westminster Salmonbellies are hosting the Peterborough Lakers.  For those who don’t know this is a best 4 of 7 for the biggest lacrosse prize in Canada.  Think Stanley Cup playoff atmosphere.  All games take place in British Columbia as this year as they alternate hosting duties with Ontario.
To me this can be an equalizer because Peterborough comes in with a completely loaded team.  The likes of Shawn Evans, Curtis Dickson and Adam Jones will be leading the offense.  NCAA fans will recognize Josh Currier (Princeton) and Jake Withers (Ohio St) who have made contributions as well.  Both guys also had solid rookie seasons in MLL.
Although I think Peterborough holds the advantage, New West has some quality players of their own.  Mitch Jones, Kevin Crowley and Logan Schuss were the top 3 goal scorers in the Western League playoffs.  I’m calling for a Peterborough Laker win 4 games to 2 to hoist the Mann Cup.  The Lakers have too many answers and the best player in Evans.  All games are available for streaming on PPV, you should be able to access them from the WLA website.  Series starts September 8th.
